Request for suppliers of high-pressure pipeline materials
We are undertaking a structured review of alternative material options for new and replacement gas pipelines operating at pressures above 7 bar. This work includes identifying suppliers whose products may be suitable for the safe transportation of natural gas (CH₄), hydrogen (H₂), and gas blends across the UK network.
Our objective is to gather information on available materials and components, understand their suitability for high‑pressure applications, and assess the supporting evidence and accreditation associated with each product.
Why high‑pressure material suitability matters
Safety
Assurance of safety, compliance, and operational integrity.
Futureproof
Alignment with future hydrogen‑readiness requirements.
Long-term planning
Evidence‑based decision‑making for long‑term asset planning.
Resilience
Strengthening resilience as infrastructure transitions to low‑carbon operation.
Information we are seeking from suppliers
We invite contact from manufacturers and suppliers who would be able to provide:
- Accredited pipeline materials for CH₄, H₂, or blended gas service
- Relevant fittings, valves, and components compatible with pressures between 7 and 100 bar
- Technical data, performance evidence, and certification
- Information on emerging technologies or innovation pipelines
Submitting information does not guarantee further engagement; it enables us to conduct a comprehensive and informed review.
Industry context
The wider gas sector is undergoing significant transformation, including:
- Preparations for hydrogen blending and potential future conversion
- Increasing scrutiny on asset resilience and compliance
- Evolving regulatory expectations and safety standards
- Greater emphasis on data‑driven material selection and lifecycle assessment

How we are supporting this work
We are coordinating a structured technical evaluation process that includes:
- Reviewing material suitability for gas, hydrogen, and blended operation
- Assessing supplier capabilities and supporting documentation
- Comparing options against high‑pressure network requirements
- Developing a robust evidence base for future decision‑making
