Combined, we have over 50 years experience, gained on a variety of projects throughout the world. But no two engineering projects are alike.

Sometimes we manage a project from the very start and continue to be involved until the end reports. Other times we are brought in to provide specialist services in specific areas. Each brings different challenges. Each has different outcomes.

Spiecapag - Multi-Product Pipeline Project Services (552) Technical Writing

The new pipeline was designed to replace and enlarge the existing Durban to Johannesburg pipeline which transports petrol, diesel and jet fuel emanating either from the two Durban refineries or increasingly from imports. With an ever increasing fuel demand in South Africa the new pipeline provided the necessary increase in the capacity and flexibility of their existing pipeline inland network. QEM Solutions were assisting the Engineering & Construction teams with key resources required within the project.

  • Acted as the glue between personnel with diverse cultural and behavioural differences and overcame many challenges of working effectively with multinational colleagues.
  • Acted as a communication channel between Joint venture parties and the client.

Main responsibilities included:

  1. Management of Setting Out & Fencing Sub-Contractors on 24" Pipeline.
  2. Assisted with tendering for 24" Stage 2 Contract, focusing on the Fibre Optic cables for the clients new telecommunication system, including deviation proposals based on feasibility and installation trials.
  3. Co-ordination of the specialist wetland team to produce specialist summary method statements for each in particular wetlands. Liaison with all parties involved and driving the production of the method summaries.
  4. Development of operational methodology and writing & review of method statements & risk assessments for all aspects of pipeline construction.
  5. Management of document control team.
  6. Management of QC activities including (temporary until resource was filled):
  7. Initial set up QA/QC department, prior to the arrival of the full time appointee. 
  8. Management of the QA/QC inspectors for pipe reception, stringing, bending and welding. Verification of the reports with client.
  9. Calibration certificates collaboration.
  10. Management of one Weld Procedure Specification and PQT's.
  11. Managed one field coating PQT.
  12. Liaised with the client & construction on any QA/QC issues.
  13. Managed NDT sub-contractor.
  14. Verification of the Welder Qualification Records.
