UK & Ireland Featured Project: FT Pipeline Systems - Integrated Management System (1254)

QEM Solutions used their understanding of the water industry to develop a management system that satisfied the requirements of ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007. QEM Solutions continue to manage and improve the organisations processes both on a corporate and project specific level.

News Spotlight How long is a piece of string? Competence in the workplace

‘Competence’ is a hazy concept. Many engineering firms now require that all contractors – on top of providing training and qualification records – evaluate the competency of all their staff. That’s a big ask, when competency seems like such a subjective asset. But, if done well, identifying required competencies for every role your people do can give employees a clear road-map of what’s expected of them, and an understanding of which of their talents are most valued.

ePermit

ePermit

ePermit is an advanced, cloud-based permitry system that increases safety and reduces downtime on large construction projects.

ePermit consists of three elements:

  • A web system that runs in a browser
  • A phone system that functions as an electronic permit
  • A tablet system that functions as an electronic permit box

ePermit runs in either paper-based or fully electronic modes. In its paper-based mode, suitable for hot works and live gas sites, where mobile phones are not allowed, printed permits are produced and the system provides robust permit control. In fully electronic mode the system provides instant distribution of permits to workers, wherever they are in the world.

The system ships with six industry-standard general and electrical permits that can be adapted for most clients. We can produce virtually any other permit for use with the system.

We can provide permits as a service, using our own management processes and permit controllers trained in the use of the system, or we can train customer permitry teams in the use of the system.

ePermit Benefits

By reducing the amount of time required to produce permits each day, ePermit increases productivity. At our reference site in north-east Scotland we reduced downtime by 20%.

By maximizing the accuracy of permits, and by increasing the time available for permit controllers to perform safety inspections, ePermit increases worker safety.

By enabling common administrative functions to be consolidated in a single back office offsite, ePermit offers large enterprises the possibility of major savings from economies of scale.

ePermit Website

The ePermit website system provides robust permit control:

  • Permits may only be created by permit controllers with that system role.
  • Permits may only be authorized by permit controllers with that system role.
  • Authorized permits can only be progressed by permit controllers with that system role.
  • Permits go into a warning state then an expired state after a selected number of days.
  • An audit trail is kept for each permit.
  • Permits are associated with risk assessments and method statements
  • Worker certificates are time-checked against a central repository of certificates held.
  • Important system events, such as permit expiry warnings, are notified by email or SMS.

The ePermit website system can be installed on customer servers on request.

The ePermity Phone App

The ePermit phone app runs on Windows 8.1 mobile phones.

The phone app has the following features:

  • Phones are associated with individual users by passwords and strong cryptographic keys.
  • The phone only shows authorized permits for that user.
  • The permit list is refreshed each time a user signs in.
  • The app includes an electronic identity card with QR codes for verification online.
  • Permits include QR codes for verification online.
  • The phone remembers permits to be used offline.

We can provide phones with the system installed. Otherwise it is available from the Windows Store.

We could develop apps for other phone operating systems on request.

The Electronic Permit Box

The electronic permit box (EPB) runs on Windows 8.1 computers, such as Microsoft Surface tablets.

The EPB takes the place of the physical permit box displayed on construction sites.

Devices are associated with projects by passwords and strong cryptographic keys.

  • The device only shows authorized permits for that project.
  • The permit list is refreshed each time a user signs in.
  • The app includes electronic worker identity cards with QR codes for verification online.
  • Permits include QR codes for verification online.
  • Worker certification can be cross-checked and viewed.
  • The device remembers permits to be used offline.

We can provide devices with the system installed. Otherwise it is available from the Windows Store.
